On small ships a belaying pin is a small wooden pin of 20 to 25 cm and with a 2 cm diameter, with a thickened upper part. On big, square-rigged ships, belaying pins are usually 40 to 50 cm long with a diameter of 3 cm. The material can be a variety of strong kinds of wood (ash, oak, teak) but it can also be brass or steel.
